Are Children's Ears More Sensitive To Loud Noises?

Children’s ears are at the most risk from hearing loss due to loud noises. This is because their ears are more sensitive to all sounds. They have narrow ear canals, which makes sounds more amplified for them. When they hear a loud noise, the ears amplify the noise at a higher rate. Children also do not know where the noise is coming from, and how to stop it.

In fact, most kids, when they hear a loud noise, want to join in to create their own loud noise. Young kids, and those kids that had a low birthrate, or were born premature are at higher risk. Children that have learning disorders, or other health conditions are also at risk.

Protecting your child from hearing loss is imperative. Having hearing loss can make learning and playing difficult. It can even cause issues with social behaviors and awareness of their environment.

How Loud Is Too Loud

Kids have high sensitivity to sounds, but some do not show it. It is important that you do what you can to make sure that they do not hear too many loud sounds. Once there is damage to the ears, there will be no going back. They will have to have hearing aids, and see a hearing care specialist for the rest of their lives.

An example of a loud noise would be fireworks or a jet taking off. Even a loud lawn mower can increase the sensitivity in a child’s ear, making ear damage possible. Toys are also another cause for concern. Some toys are very loud and can hurt your child’s hearing. This is especially true if the child has a tendency to put the toys up close to their faces.

Another issue that can affect your child’s hearing is exposure to loud music or gaming noises. For example, if your child is playing an online game with headphones, they may have the volume turned up too loud. This can lead to hearing loss.

How To Protect Your Child’s Hearing

There are several steps that you can take to help your child with hearing sensitivity. These steps include:

  • Removing batteries. Removing batteries from toys that have loud noises will help to protect your child’s hearing.
  • Teach. Teach your kids about how noise can cause hearing loss. Even at a young age, you can teach kids the proper volume that their noise should be.
  • Taking breaks. Have your child take breaks from the noise. Sitting and reading is a great activity that will help them to take a break from any loud noises.
  • Invest in quality headphones. Find your child quality headphones that reduce outside noise. This will help your child hear their music or game better, so they do not have to increase the volume.
  • Earplugs. If your children are going to an event where you know the noises will be loud, have them put in ear plugs or wear earmuffs.
