How Ear Infections Can Lead To Hearing Loss

Like other illnesses, ear infections can cause long-term damage when left untreated. It's vital that you know the common symptoms of this condition and know when to seek medical help. The sooner you treat it, the less likely your infection will lead to permanent hearing damage.

The Symptoms Of An Ear Infection

An ear infection, known as otitis media, is an infection of the middle ear. This is the result of a virus or bacteria entering the canal. An ear infection will result in inflammation and fluid buildup behind your eardrum. While these types of infections are most common in children, they can show up in adults. Below are some of the most common symptoms that you may be experiencing when you have an ear infection:

  • Fever
  • Fussiness/Irritability
  • Ear Drainage
  • Trouble Hearing
  • Unsteadiness
  • Diarrhea/Vomiting
  • Inability to Lie Down and Be Comfortable

If you have some or all these symptoms, it's a sign that you should seek medical attention. The sooner you get treatment, the less likely the effects will be permanent.

How Can An Ear Infection Can Cause Hearing Loss

When you have an ear infection, it's common that you'll have difficulty hearing in that ear. This is due to the fluid buildup behind the eardrum. This inflammation will inhibit the transmission of sound vibrations. These vibrations are necessary for your brain to register the sounds around you.

In most cases when you treat your infection, your short-term hearing loss will last for two to three days. But, some may experience a lingering effect of the fluid, which can last for up to three full months.

When To See A Doctor For Hearing Loss Caused By An Ear Infection

It's true that most ear infections will clear up within three short days. But, you'll want to contact your doctor if you notice any of the four issues below:

  • Fever of 102.2 or Higher
  • Hearing Loss
  • Worsening Symptoms
  • Fluid or Pus in the Ear

If you have any of the symptoms above, it's a sign that your infection is more severe. You'll likely receive antibiotics to help rid your body of the infection. It's a good idea to check in with your hearing care professional if your situation is getting worse. Remember that letting this problem persist can lead to permanent hearing damage.
