How To Protect Your Hearing In The Winter

The winter months are beautiful. You have the holidays, beautiful snow, and cooler weather. But, your hearing can be at risk during these cold months. This is especially true if you already suffer from hearing loss. There are several things that you will need to do to protect your hearing.

Using Ear Protection When Snow Blowing

If you live in an area that is prone to snowfall, chances are that you use a snow blower often. A snow blower can damage your hearing, and if you already suffer from hearing loss, you do not want to make it worse. Wear ear protection whenever you are using loud machinery.

Keep Your Ears Dry And Warm

If your ears stay moist and cold, this can lead to an increased chance of problems. Also, if you are wearing hearing aids, the moisture can damage the hearing aids themselves. Use a headband, hat, or ear warmers every time you go out into the cold.

Clean Your Ears This Winter

To protect your ears, you will want to ensure that you clean them often. Cold and wind will cause your ears to produce more wax than usual. When you do not clean your ears, it can cause a build-up of wax. This wax can cause hearing issues, ear infections, and cause your hearing aids to not work.

Protecting Your Hearing Aids In The Winter

When it comes to protecting your hearing, you will also want to protect your hearing aids. When it is cold, it can hamper the battery life of your aids. The cold air can also cause moisture to build up inside your ear canal. This moisture will cause damage to the hearing aids. To protect your aids, wear ear muffs to ensure that they are nice and dry. You can also buy a dryer for your aids.

Watching Out For Winter Ear Infections

In colder months, ear infections are more common. Make sure that you know all the signs and symptoms. These include discharge, worsening hearing loss, ear pain, and redness. If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor or hearing care specialist as soon as possible. Left untreated, ear infections can lead to severe problems. These issues can include hearing loss, and even death if the infection spreads to the blood or brain.
