ReSound Sensia

The ReSound Sensia is a premium hearing aid that automatically focuses on the person you're facing in noisy places while preserving awareness of the world around you.

The ReSound Sensia is GN Hearing's newest premium hearing aid family, designed to focus on the person you're facing in a noisy room rather than simply the loudest voice. It builds on the small, rechargeable design of ReSound Vivia, and it's available at Family Audiology and Hearing Centers.

About the ReSound Sensia Hearing Aid

Many AI-powered hearing aids are very good at pulling speech out of noise, but they may favor the loudest or most noticeable voice in the room, even if that person is two tables away. The ReSound Sensia addresses this by pairing AI that has been trained to separate speech from noise with microphones that pick up speech from the direction you're facing.

On ReSound Vivia, the strongest noise reduction had to be switched on through a separate program. On the premium Sensia 9 rechargeable model, the hearing aids recognize when conversation is hard to follow in noise and turn that help on by themselves.

Hands-Free Speech Focus with Intelligent All-Around

Intelligent All-Around is ReSound's name for Sensia's automatic setting. It brings together three technologies: AcoustIQ, which identifies the kind of place you're in and decides which features to use; a set of four microphones, two on each hearing aid, that work together to bring forward the voice in front of you; and AI noise reduction, which quiets competing voices around the person you're talking to.

In quieter places, Sensia listens in all directions so you can still tell where sounds are coming from. As things get louder, it can focus one hearing aid toward the front while the other keeps listening more broadly. When Sensia 9 notices steady conversation in front of you in loud noise, it switches to its strongest focus, waiting until it's sure a conversation is happening (which can take about a minute) so the sound doesn't keep changing back and forth.

In a GN study of 20 hearing aid users, Sensia made the person in front the easiest voice to hear for 80% of participants when someone equally loud was talking from the side. That study measured which voice was easiest to hear rather than how many words people understood, so we view it as promising early evidence.

Key Features of the ReSound Sensia

  • Two Types of Noise Reduction: The AI noise reduction handles conversations in noise, while ReSound's Noise Tracker II takes over for steady noise with no one talking, such as a vacuum cleaner or fan.
  • Speech Comes First: Sensia doesn't automatically switch to a music setting, because it can't tell whether you want to hear the band or the person across the table. It focuses on speech by default, and a separate music setting is available whenever you want it.
  • Rechargeable Battery Life: The rechargeable models are rated for at least 24 hours of use, with up to roughly 30 hours depending on how you use them.
  • Connectivity: Sensia streams calls and audio using Bluetooth LE Audio, a newer streaming standard, and supports Auracast, which lets places such as theaters send sound straight to your hearing aids. GN states that Auracast works now rather than waiting on a future update. For people with a Cochlear Nucleus cochlear implant in one ear, ReSound Sensia Bimodal is designed to work together with the implant.
  • Styles and Technology Levels: Sensia comes in several behind-the-ear styles, where a small speaker sits in the ear canal, as well as custom styles that fit inside the ear. The premium Sensia 9 rechargeable behind-the-ear model is fully automatic, Sensia 7 offers the AI noise reduction through a setting you choose yourself, and custom in-ear models use directional microphones without AI noise reduction at launch.

Who Is the ReSound Sensia Right For?

The ReSound Sensia suits people who struggle to follow conversation in restaurants and gatherings but don't want to change settings or open an app to get help. It also fits anyone who likes Vivia's small rechargeable design, wants to use Auracast now, or has a Cochlear Nucleus implant. For the most help, you'll need to face the person you want to hear, and the hearing aid takes a little time before switching to its strongest focus. We'll help you decide whether the ReSound Sensia or another device is the better fit.
